Community meeting to be held as Rhode Island Recycled Metals looks to re-open

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A community meeting will be held tonight by Rhode Island Recycled Metals as the business looks to re-open following their temporary shutdown.
On July 12, Judge Brian Stern cited the business as a “public nuisance” after the second fire at the Allens Avenue scrapyard.
Stern ordered that it would remained shut down until it can prove it is equipped to prevent future fires.
Officials including Mayor Brett Smiley, members of the Providence City Council and Rhode Island General Assembly, and Attorney General Peter Neronha have attempted to shutdown the yard multiple times previously.
A status conference with the state is set for Friday, however the meeting tonight will “consist of a public meeting on behalf of Rhode Island Recycled Metals per request by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to provide the public with updated information regarding the environmental site investigations and the public involvement plan occurring.”
The meeting will be held at Knight Memorial Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Elmwood Avenue.
