GLOCESTER, R.I. (WLNE) – Firefighters battled smoke and flames at the late into the night in an effort to save a home in Glocester owned by a Johnston city firefighter.

“It was an unusual set of circumstances to have a firefighter on duty protecting residents in Johnston and his own home burns,” said Johnston Fire Chief Peter Lamb.

The home belonged to Johnston firefighter Adam Barros and has been deemed a total loss. Early Thursday morning the community came together to pitch in any way they can help.

“We’re a tight community and we feel for all the people in our town so I thought it would be a good idea to show up and support him,” said Johnston resident John Graham. “The fire department supports everything we do in our town.”

All four fire stations in Johnston are collecting gift cards, clothes and other goods for the family. Chief Lamb said donations are coming in steadily.

A GoFundMe page has been set up and collected more than $10,000 for the family.

Barros has been dismissed from his duties for the immediate future. But his brothers have his back and will continue keeping the town safe.

“It’s devastating,” said Chief Lamb. “The fire service is a brother and sisterhood. We look out for our own. And each and every one of us feels a piece of this.”
