Computer Crimes Unit Speaks on Cyber Security

On Thursday, the Rhode Island State Police opened the doors to their Computer Crimes Unit.

The Computer Crimes Unit provides computer-related investigative, forensic, and legal expertise for all cyber related areas. Detectives say 90% of crimes have a cyber connection and with the ever-changing cyber technology, this unit tries to stay one step ahead.

Congressman Jim Langevin announced the creation of the unit back in July and today toured the facility. He recognizes that “threats are always changing, we're never going to be one hundred percent secure. What we can do is close that window of vulnerability to the minimum level possible.”

He also makes recommendations to keep your personal computer safe. “Just doing basic computer hygiene, making sure that people have their cyber security software on there, and have their firewalls up.”

Detectives say to be cautious and do your own investigating. Make sure the sites you visit are legitimate and be cautious of unsolicited e-mails.
