Congregation returns to Shiloh Gospel Temple in North Providence after fire
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Just days after their church was set on fire, the congregation of Shiloh Gospel Temple returned, preaching resilience, hope, and community.
Dozens of community members, local officials, advocates, and religious leaders come out to speak after federal charges were filed against a North Providence man, Kevin Colantonio, on Thursday.
“And what happened a few days ago was a rude awakening,” Pastor Chris Abhulime said. “That there are still some among us, who continue to hold onto the archaic idealities that want to separate and divide us. And that there’s a reminder here that that history of black churches being burned down, that that history has not stopped.” says Pastor
Abhulime also serves as Gov. Dan McKees deputy chief of staff.
Colantonio was arrested in his home in North Providence and is facing charges of maliciously damaging a building with fire.
But advocates want the case to be investigated as a hate crime and raise the charge to arson.
“We want to definitely make sure that there’s a clear and concise investigation,” Church Administrator Ty’relle Stephens said. “This is in fact, of my opinion, in fact, a hate crime against the church and we definitely need to make sure that we look more into it.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said more charges could come as the investigation continues.
For now, community leaders are making sure the congregation knows it’s safe in North Providence.
“I’d like to think this is an isolated incident,” North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi said. “And I can only guarantee you that we’re going to make sure that that’s what it was. And also, to ensure everyone, please, you’re safe here.”
The congregation returned to services for the first time since the fires Friday night.
Staff with the church said there are some damages from the fire they’re working on fixing, with staff planning to start a GoFundMe to cover some of the costs.
Colantonio is expected back in court at the end of the month, on Feb. 28.
