Construction begins on Quonset ‘blue economy’ pier

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Federal and local leaders gathered with the Quonset Development Corporation for a ceremony marking the beginning of construction on the Port of Davisville’s Terminal 5 Pier and Blue Economy Support Docks.
The corporation said the pier will feature “specialized berthing spaces” for offshore wind vessels, while the Blue Economy docks will have smaller ramps for local small businesses and research vessels.
The dock is also set to be the first new pier built at Quonset in almost 70 years.
“Investments in Quonset are investments in Rhode Island’s future,” Gov. Dan McKee said. “These new projects support the rising demand in the offshore wind industry and reaffirm Rhode Island’s position as a leader in the Blue Economy.”
The project was fully funded through State Fiscal Recovery Funds, allocated to Rhode Island as part of the American Rescue Plan Act.
