Construction on scaled-down nightclub fire memorial to begin

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) _ Construction on a scaled-down memorial for the 100 victims of a 2003 nightclub fire in Rhode Island is beginning its first phase.
Gina Russo, president of the Station Fire Memorial Foundation, says the group has received its building permit from the town of
Russo says first up is work to clear brush, level the land and dig in the parking lot to bury a vault containing artifacts from a temporary memorial.
The memorial will no longer include a 30-foot-tall harp. Russo says it would have been too expensive.
They foundation hopes to raise $2 million and has about $300,000 in the bank. The Feb. 20, 2003, fire was sparked by pyrotechnics for the band Great White.
