JAMESTOWN, R.I. (AP) _ A median barrier will soon divide the eastbound and westbound lanes on the Pell Bridge.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority announced Monday that it had begun construction on the concrete barrier, which will run the length of the bridge.

The agency is urging drivers to be extra cautious on the bridge during construction, which is expected to last until mid-May.

The purpose of the barrier is to enhance safety on the bridge over Narragansett Bay between Newport and Jamestown by minimizing crossover accidents.

The move to install a barrier on the four-lane bridge picked up last year, in response to a fatal head-on accident in 2011 that killed two people and another head-on accident in 2013 that resulted in the death of a 75-year-old man.
