PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The family of Providence City Councilor Helen Anthony says she remains in intensive care in Salinas, California, after she was hit by a vehicle this past weekend.

“[Anthony] is unable to receive cards or calls at this time,” said the family in a statement Thursday.

Her family is asking people to consider making a donation in her name to the Domestic Violence Program at Crossroads Rhode Island.

“Before becoming an elected official, Helen volunteered at the Women’s Center of RI, a domestic violence shelter which merged with Crossroads RI,” they said.

Anyone interested in making a donation can visit crossroadsri.org.

“Our family is profoundly grateful for the outpouring of concern for Helen and the prayers for her recovery,” wrote Anthony’s family. “Her injuries are serious, but she is in the capable hands of an excellent team of physicians.”

According to a police report, just after 9 a.m. on June 10, Anthony was walking in a crosswalk in Monterey across the Point Lobos State National Reserve entrance.

That’s when, for unknown reasons, an 82-year-old man sped his 2013 Polaris and hit the councilwoman, police said. He remained on scene and cooperated with officers.

Police said alcohol and drugs are not a factor in the crash at this time.
