Court: Suspect convicted in 2010 Providence stabbing death cold case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence cold case was closed Thursday after a former North Attleboro man was convicted in a 2010 manslaughter trial in Providence County Superior Court.
According to Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha, 38-year-old Jason Lopes was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of 22-year-old Zackary Marshall.
Lopes was found to have stabbed Marshall to death outside of a Peck Street bar on December 18, 2010.
Providence police responded to the incident at 2:07 a.m., finding Marshall on the sidewalk suffering from four stab wounds to the chest and torso.
He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Due to a lack of witness accounts, the case went cold until 2020 when new information was introduced to police.
A friend of Lopes was arrested on unrelated charges in 2020, and told police that on the night of the murder, Lopes called him asking for a ride from downtown Providence at approximately 3 a.m.
The friend stated that Lopes admitted to getting into an altercation and stabbing someone.
Lopes also revealed the names of the three friends accompanying him during the incident.
Those three individuals were identified and interviewed by investigators.
Two of them testified to a grand jury that Lopes had stabbed Marshall.
Lopes was arrested in Garland, Texas on March 12, 2021, and admitted to police that he had stabbed Marshall.
It was determined that Marshall and Lopes engaged in the altercation as both left nearby restaurants.
Lopes was determined to have stabbed Marshall and fled the scene with his group of friends.
