Cranston man arrested for multiple warrants while on fishing boat in Narragansett

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — Yesterday, the U.S. Coast Guard Point Judith assisted Narragansett Police Department, along with Rhode Island Department Environmental Management (DEM) to arrest a wanted individual.

The man, identified as 41-year-old John Avarista from Cranston, was wanted on numerous warrants for multiple demeanors and felonies from Connecticut and Rhode Island.

In total, he had seven warrants out for his arrest.

Avarista is suspected of domestic violence and assault.

He was arrested Sunday when he was spotted on a fishing vessel in Narragansett.

According to a release from the coast guard, the suspect got tipped that law enforcement was waiting at the fishing vessel’s home port at Galilee, and the suspect diverted to a nearby dock in attempt elude arresting officers.

Both teams, on the water and landside, recognized the fishing vessel’s change in docking location and swiftly took action to meet the vessel near Great Island Road in Narragansett, said the release.
