Cranston police being sued $2 million by prisoner who was assaulted by officer

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE)- A prisoner who was assaulted by a Cranston police officer last year, filed a lawsuit against the police department for $2 million on Monday.

Gian Mattiello’s lawyer filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Providence, complaining that the department’s “pattern and practice of using excessive force” was the reason that he was assaulted by Andrew Leonard.

The department had been notified of it’s failures to “train, supervise and provide policies to employees” at the time of the assault, according to the lawsuit.

“We have serious concerns about previous incidents and about the policy and culture of the department that we intend to investigate through this lawsuit,” Mattiello’s attorney, Carl Hurvich said.

Mattiello is seeking $2 million in emotional pain, suffering, inconvenience, mental anguish and other impacts.
