Crash involving RIPTA bus in Jamestown sends 3 to hospital

JAMESTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Four people were injured after a RIPTA bus crashed and rolled onto its side in Jamestown Thursday.
Westbound traffic on the Newport Bridge was temporarily stopped because of the crash.
An ABC6 News crew in the area of the toll plaza on the Jamestown side of the bridge observed a RIPTA bus tipped on its side.
Rhode Island State Police said the bus driver and two passengers were taken to the hospital, but did not provide an update on their condition.
Police also said a third passenger declined treatment at the scene.
The crash occurred on Route 138 West at the end of the Newport Bridge.
Rhode Island State Police said the preliminary police investigation indicates the bus driver lost control of the vehicle at the end of the bridge, struck the center guardrail, crossed both west bound travel lanes, and collided with a light pole and the guardrail.
The bus then rolled onto its left side.
Traffic reopened in the area as of 2 p.m.
The Rhode Island State Police Wickford Barracks is investigating the crash.
