Early morning fire in Central Falls closes middle school

By News Staff
Fire crews had a difficult time battling an early morning fire in Central Falls Tuesday.
The fire started just before 6 a.m. at a garage building at 96 Washington Street.
Fire Chief Robert Bradley says crews had an extremely difficult time trying to gain access to the building and the smoke from the fire made it extremely difficult time to breathe.
A hazmat team was called in to monitor the air quality. The Narraganset Bay Commission and DEM were also called.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation. The garage was stocked with building supplies and is a total loss.
No one was injured but 8-12 people in the building next door had to be evacuated.
Calcutt Middle School, which is just a short distance down the road, is closed Tuesday because of the fire.
The state fire marshal is assisting in the investigation.
