Cruise line to call Providence home port
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Brett Smiley and American Cruise Lines announced Thursday that Providence would host cruise ships for the first time in four years.
The cruise line said it will begin to run ships through the Seastreak Ferry Terminal on India Street in May.
A temporary floating dock will be used to accommodate the ships while a permanent plan was worked out.
Smiley added that the cruise line plans to invest in lasting infrastructure improvements that would allow Providence to become a permanent homeport for the company’s New England Island’s cruise.
Eight day cruises from Providence are planned to visit New Beford, Nantucket, and Block Island, among others.
