Cumberland High School is closed on Monday as a result of water damage and mechanical issues caused by the extreme cold over the weekend.

Around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday the high school experienced an isolated heating pump drive coupler failure, the pump facilitates water to flow through a pipe that heats a portion of the building. The failure of the pump drive resulted in the malfunction of the heating loop in the third floor English wing.

As a result of the extreme cold, heating coils in the classrooms froze and ruptured causing water leaks down to the first and second floors. 12 classrooms and offices are affected.

The issue was discovered by a weekend janitor in the building.

School is expected to resume on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at the high school. Some ceiling tiles and classroom equipment may be damaged.
