Cumberland native takes charge of Navy unit

SAN DIEGO, CA (WLNE) — A Cumberland, Rhode Island native has taken charge of the U.S. Navy vessel the USS John P. Murtha.

Captain Ryan Billington took over the vessel at a change of command ceremony on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum in San Diego on Jan. 12.

He will be relieving Captain Doug Langenberg as commanding officer of the USS. John P. Murtha.

Billington graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine transportation in 1999.

He has served as an electrical officer, a weapons officer and a executive officer.

“This ship and her crew have an impressive resume of operational accomplishments. I am very proud and humbled to be part of this team and I look forward to the future successes and challenges we will face and overcome together.” said Billington.
