The town of Cumberland has become the first public school district in the state to adopt a formal transgender policy.
The School Committee voted 7-0 Thursday to approve the policy which allows students to use the restroom consistent with their gender identity.
It also allows students who feel uncomfortable using gender-specific bathrooms an alternative, like the nurse’s bathroom.
