Cunha: Rhode Island burglars used drones, GPS vehicle trackers to rob homes
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A fugitive wanted in a multi-state burglary ring targeting mostly Asian-owned businesses has been arrested, according to Rhode Island U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha’s office.
Barrera Garrido, 20, was arrested in Grove City, OH on March 11 and is accused of burgling homes in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Wisconsin and Florida.
Garrido and three other conspirators would allegedly surveil Asian-owned businesses and their owners at their businesses and residences and then commit well-planned burglaries in their homes.
They typically targeted large sums of money, jewelry, credit and debit cards and other valuables.
The conspirators are alleged to have used drones and GPS trackers attached to victim’s vehicles to monitor their movement and pinpoint times they would be away from their residences.
The drones were also used as lookouts for law enforcement.
Garrido was ordered detained Thursday following his return to Rhode Island and arraignment in U.S. District Court.
His alleged conspirators are identified as Mohammed Islam, 29, of Stamford, CT, a Bangladesh national, Basneyareth Rebollar Martinez, of Stamford, CT, a Mexican national, and Tania Valentina Espitia Cuellar, 24, a Columbian national.
