PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A dairy product company on Tuesday will be donating 100,000 cartons of shelf-stable milks to a local food bank.

Garelick Farms will be donating “Giving Cow” milks to Rhode Island Community Food Bank. The food bank reaches a total of 54,000 struggling Rhode Islanders each month at food pantries, meal sites and shelters, youth programs and senior centers.

“Due to the challenge of refrigerating milk, many food pantries just don’t have enough storage for the individuals that they serve, yet milk is one of the most highly requested items,” said a spokesperson for Dairy Farmers of America.

The ultra-high temperature pasteurized milk has a shelf life of up to 12 months, unlike fresh milk which normally has a shelf life of only 20 days.
