Dan Doyle sentenced to serve seven year for embezzlement

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Institute of International Sport founder Dan Doyle has been sentenced to 7 years to serve. The jail time coming months after the 68-year-old was convicted of 18 counts, including embezzlement, forgery and obtaining money under false pretenses.

“The institute is gone because of the defendant’s greed because of his arrogance and because of his ego,” said the prosecutor prior to sentencing.

Doyle’s defense attorney vowing to fight the ruling.

“He does not believe that he has committed any of the offenses that he is charged with,” said Doyle’s attorney Kevin Bristow. “I think he was devoted to the mission. I think he believes that he always acted in the best interest of the institute.”

The 68-year-old, who has vehemently maintained his innocence, briefly addressed he judge, notably not offering up any form of apology.

“I want you to know your honor that I believe I have much more to offer and much, much more to do in this life, said Doyle.

In addition to the jail time, Doyle has been ordered to pay the Hassenfeld Foundation $555,000.

The judge denied the defenses request to stay the sentence and to wait a month before Doyle went to prison. Bristow says he plans to file before an emergency duty judge.
