A portion of Westminster Street in Providence was shut down for hours Friday as SWAT teams searched the area for a suspect on the run.
Dwayne Gibson, a 20-year-old known gang member, fled when officers tried to arrest him. He is wanted on a charge of illegally possessing a firearm and is considered to be armed and extremely dangerous.
Police say Gibson fled earlier this month during a car stop and have been looking for him for weeks. When officers attempted to arrest him Friday, he ran into an apartment complex.
"We figured we'd play it safe and cautious and bring back the special response unit team, the swat team, and strategically go through every single apartment. We knew from the beginning he had a pretty good gap in time to escape through the back door and in the end, after searching those apartments, that's in fact what has happened,” said Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements.
If you see this subject or have any information on his whereabouts, please contact the Providence Police Department at (401) 272-3121.
In the process of searching for Gibson, police also arrested another known gang member, Fabio Martinez, on a firearms charge.
