PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Daniel Doyle, the man who allegedly embezzled millions from the non-profit he funded, filed a motion for bail pending appeal Wednesday.
The 68-year-old, West Hartford, Conn. man was convicted of embezzling millions of dollars from the Institute for International Sport, a non-profit organization he founded in the late 80’s at the University of Rhode Island.
Doyle was sentenced last week to 10 to 15 years in prison, with 7 to serve for his conviction on 18 counts — including embezzlement, obtaining money under false pretenses, forgery and counterfeiting and filing a false report with a public official. In addition to jail time, Doyle was ordered to pay the Hassenfeld Foundation $555,000.
The motion will be heard by the Supreme Court on Sept. 7.
Doyle’s previous requests to remain free on bail or be given 30 days to surrender were denied by Superior Court at the time of his sentencing on Aug. 10.
In his memorandum to the Supreme Court, his lawyers insisted Doyle posed no risk of flight or danger to the public because he has no criminal record and has "maintained ties to Rhode Island" for over 45 years. He will agree to an increased bail if seen fit.
