Dartmouth Police Officer arrested on child rape charges

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) – A Dartmouth Police officer was arrested Thursday on charges related to the rape and assault of a child.
Shawn Souza, 37, was arrested by Massachusetts State Police Thursday at the Dartmouth Police Station.
Souza faces the following charges:
- Rape of a child by force,
- Rape of a child-aggravated by age difference
- Two counts of Indecent Assault and Battery on a person under 14 years old by a mandated reporter.
The District Attorney’s office said the arrest came after an Special Victims Unit investigation into a report by the Department of Children and Families.
Souza was held overnight and arraigned in New Bedford District Court. He will return to court Monday for a dangerousness hearing.
