DEM urges patience ahead of busy beach week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)– With warm weather expecting to bring crowds to the state’s beaches this weekend, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is urging patience at entrances, and for visitors to expect parking delays.
With parking capacity reduced in an effort to maintain social distancing, the DEM expects some lots to close during peak beach hours.
“With the start of the peak summer season tomorrow, we anticipate that all of our beach facilities will be busy and reach capacity,” DEM Director Janet Coit said. “It is important for Rhode Islanders to know that the lots may fill quickly. If you arrive at a favorite beach and find that crowds are forming or the parking lot is full, please leave and choose a different location or return at another time of day.”
According to a statement from the DEM, the department’s environmental police will be redirecting traffic when lots have reached capacity.
The department has asked visitors to follow social distancing guidelines, including wearing masks when in pavilions or restrooms, and maintaining 6 feet of distance from anyone not in an individual’s household.
The DEM also advises that visitors can save time by buying seasonal and daily passes online.
More information on state parks and beaches can be found on the DEM’s website.
