Democrats weighing options after Biden drops out of 2024 election
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — In an unprecedented turn of events Sunday, incumbent candidate Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
“We don’t need a senior citizen in office,” Ronnie Steele of Arizona said. “So let’s get him out, have somebody new come in, let the younger generations come in and start running things.”
Although the 59-year-old Harris appears to be the clear front-runner, delegates are still up in the air.
“There’s a range of options,” Brown University Politics Professor Corey Brettschneider said. “One would be something like a mini primary and there’s a lot of discussion about that. At the other end of the spectrum would be lobbying of the delegates to be given over to one particular candidate.”
Many local democrats are endorsing Harris, displaying confidence that the transition will go smoothly.
“My sense is we will have time over the next few days to figure out a process, a process that reflects our values,” Rhode Island Representative Gabe Amo said. “I certainly am endorsing the vice president, and as we look at who could be a VP nominee for her, that time will come.”
Rhode Island’s GOP released a statement Sunday saying Biden’s withdrawal has left the Democratic Party in “total turmoil” and affirmed their support of the republican nominee, former President Donald Trump.
