Deputy Chief Medeiros elevated to Chief of New Bedford Fire Department

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell announced the elevation of Deputy Fire Chief Brian Medeiros to lead the city’s fire department, according to a statement from Mitchell’s office.

Medeiros will replace retiring Chief Scott Kruger, who will end his 30-year career with the New Bedford Fire Department this week.

“I am honored to accept the appointment as Fire Chief,” Medeiros said.

“I see this role as not just a position, but a commitment to service, leadership and the safety of every member of this department and our residents.”

Medeiros started in the department as a firefighter in 1996, reaching the rank of lieutenant in 2008.

He was promoted to captain in 2012, district chief in 2020 and deputy chief in 2022.

Medeiros has remained committed to furthering his training and education in the field, earning an associate’s degree in fire science from Bristol Community College and multiple Pro Board certifications.

He has also been a member of the Massachusetts Hazardous Materials Response Team since 2019 and deployed to North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence in 2018.

“Chief Medeiros has a long record of effective service to the residents of New Bedford,” said Mayor
Mitchell.

“His leadership skills, experience, and commitment to data-driven decision making will enable him to lead the department in the years ahead.”

Chief Scott Kruger announced his retirement on June 11.
