Deputy sheriff shot at Cranston ACI

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Public Safety announced that a deputy sheriff has been shot at the Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston.

Around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, a firearm discharged and shot an on-duty sheriff on the grounds of the ACI.

The injured deputy sheriff sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

DPS said that there were no ACI detainees or employees involved or present when the firearm went off.

The two deputy sheriffs are members of the department’s Inmate Control and Custody Transportation Unit, which is responsible for transporting inmates.

According to the Rhode Island State Police Detective Bureau, the firearm discharge was accidental.

However, the incident remains under investigation.
