Dighton drugged driver sentenced for police chase resulting in 5 serious crashes

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — A 31-year-old Dighton man, who while high on drugs, led Rehoboth police on a chase through several Rhode Island towns before crashing was sentenced to state prison for the crimes committed in Massachusetts.

Officials said Cary Guy, 31, was sentenced to three years in state prison after pleading guilty to two charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, OUI-drugs second offense, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a license.

Court documents state that on May 24, 2022, a Rehoboth police officer was patrolling the area of Moulton Street. While parked, he noticed a Ford F-150 pass him at 53 mph in a 40 mph zone and continue accelerating.

After stopping the truck, the officer walked to the driver’s side but it fled before the officer could reach it. The officer then began to chase the truck that was driving erratically, passing cars in the oncoming lane at high speeds.

On two separate occasions, officials said the officer pulled up next to the truck but had to swerve to avoid being hit by the truck, aimed at the officer.

The chase continued onto Route 195 until Rehoboth police called it off in an attempt to monitor the truck. After crossing into East Providence, the truck hit five cars while driving in the wrong direction. Six people suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash.

After the series of crashes, first responders noticed Guy lying in the roadway. Several hypodermic needles were also found in the truck.

Guy was arrested by Rhode Island State Police and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Blood analyses from Guy later tested positive for marijuana, cocaine, morphine and fentanyl.

Guy had previous OUI-Drugs conviction out of Attleboro District Court from 2017 and his license was suspended at the time of his arrest due to previous traffic violations.
