Dighton Elementary School wins MassDOT snow plow naming contest

DIGHTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Call it what you want, but today was the best day for Mrs. Perry’s first grade class at Dighton Elementary School.

“It warms my heart up just to see how excited they were,” teacher Lisa Perry said. “From the moment they stepped into school this morning they knew something big was about to happen.”

Mrs. Perry’s class won a MassDOT contest to name a snow plow and decided on the name “Taylor Drift” after pop star Taylor Swift.

She said her classroom’s theme was “kindness and friendship” and she’s been using pop star Taylor Swift as an example for her students.

Just like the “Swiftie” practice, the class made friendship bracelets.

“We’re really embracing and building community in the classroom,” Perry added. “When the contest came up, we thought what a great opportunity, let’s have a little bit of fun. We never expected all of this was going to happen.”

“As they saw the cars rolling and watching the truck pulling in, watching the pure joy in their face was an amazing feeling,” Perry said.

With more than 900 applicants, only 12 schools were chosen as winners.

MassDOT hosted its third annual snow plow naming contest all across Massachusetts.

“The program itself it intended to promote roadway safety and to get young people aware of the equipment and the need for snow removal,” MassDOT Undersecretary Hayes Morrison said.
