Dighton Middle School gym dedicated to beloved teacher, driving instructor

DIGHTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Dighton Middle School’s gym is now dedicated to a man who spent countless hours teaching and coaching in it.

School administrators officially named the gym after John Masciarelli in a ceremony Saturday morning.

Masciarelli was a physical education teacher and coach at the school for 36 years until his retirement in 2001.

He was also a founding member of the Massasoit Middle School Sports League.

Masciarelli died in a car crash in Mansfield last spring while serving as a student driving instructor.

Plaques are now posted inside and outside the gym recognizing the man known to many friends and colleagues simply as “Mash.”

Retiring state Sen. Marc Pacheco joined a list of speakers paying tribute to Masciarelli, including Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District Superintendent Bill Runey.

I have been doing this for 36 years as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal and now superintendent,” Runey said. “If I can make half the difference that I sense Coach Masciarelli did, I’ll consider it a successful career.”
