Dighton police arrest two for allegedly carrying replica BB guns

DIGHTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Dighton police officers said they arrested two individuals who were allegedly carrying replica BB guns during motor vehicle stops yesterday.

According to officials, an officer was patrolling when he made a motor vehicle stop for an expired registration.

During his roadside interview, the officer said he noticed the handle of a revolver near the driver.

The officer quickly placed the driver into custody.

Officials said further investigation revealed that the revolver was a full-scale replica BB gun, complete with a functioning cylinder and replica rounds.

The driver allegedly admitted to carrying it for intimidation purposes, believing its appearance would “deter” others.

Another officer was patrolling when he also made a motor vehicle stop for speeding.

Police said that during this roadside encounter, dispatchers informed the officer the motor vehicle registration status required the vehicle to be towed.

During the motor vehicle inventory, replica firearms were discovered in the motor vehicle, police said.

One of these “weapons” was holstered, police said, mimicking the carry of a real firearm.

“These incidents underscore the critical need for heightened awareness regarding replica firearms, which can closely resemble real weapons,” said the department on Facebook.

“The responses of our officers exemplified excellent restraint and sound judgment, contributing to a positive outcome in potentially volatile situations. Both officers acted swiftly and effectively, ensuring safety for all involved,” it said.
