Dighton police sergeant testifies on damaged taillight in Karen Read retrial
DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — A Dighton police sergeant testified in Karen Read’s retrial Tuesday afternoon.
Sergeant Nick Barros testified as a prosecution witness in Read’s first trial, but was called by the defense for the retrial.
Barros became involved in the case because Read’s parents live in Dighton, which is where state police detectives seized her SUV.
The defense focused on what sergeant Barros’ noticed about the SUV’s taillight before the vehicle was towed.
The defense argued that the damage was less than what was later reported by Massachusetts State Police.
“There was, it was damage to the taillight, the taillight was damaged, but there was a crack missing, but it was not completely damaged,” Barros said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Judge Cannone denied a defense motion for a mistrial.
That motion came while a dog bite expert was testifying about John O’Keefe’s injuries.
The defense felt special prosecutor Hank Brennan should not have been allowed to question the witness about dog DNA.
