BROCKTON, Mass. (WLNE) — A dog was shot and killed by a Brockton police officer last week.

The Brockton Police Department said the officer, who was not identified, was responding to an enforcement call on Hermon Street Thursday, when the dog ran at him.

In a statement, the department said, “The officer discharged his firearm at the dog to protect himself from injury.”

“There’s no way that officer was in fear of injury or getting hurt by a little dog like that,” said Angela Cordero, the owner of the 1-year-old dog named Leia.

No further information was released.
