Dogs evacuated due to Hurricane Michael arrive in RI

Brisket, Zeppelin, and Mandie are just a few of the ten dogs calling the Potter League in Middletown home – for now.

“They were in a shelter in Birmingham, Alabama,” says Executive Director Brad Shear.

“But after the hurricane hit the shelters wanted to clear out whatever animals they could so they could take care of their own community,” he says.

So the dogs were put on a plane to New Jersey, and from there, started the long ride to Rhode Island. Mel Morgan from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center drove them up.

“They’re quiet on the way up and it seems when we get close to the shelter they know, and they wake up,” she says.

Thanks to recent adoptions, space cleared up for them at the Potter League just in time.

“If we had gotten the call about these dogs a week ago we probably wouldn’t have been able to take them,” Shear says.

The Potter League is still housing animals rescued from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and they’re expecting some cats from Michael-ravaged areas soon, too.

But hopefully, their stay is short and sweet.

They have to remain in isolation for five days before they can be put up for adoption. They should be spayed, neutered, and ready to adopt by next week.
