Domestic birds at risk after Avian Flu detected in Massachusetts

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) – Authorities are warning domestic bird owners that a variant of Avian (Bird) Flu has been found in parts of Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) says Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been detected in Essex County.

MDAR officials say they dealt with a backyard flock contaminated with the virus after birds in the affected area died suddenly.

Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife says they have also received reports of dead and dying wild Canada geese showing symptoms consistent with HPAI.

MADR says domestic poultry owners should prevent their animals from having contact with wild birds, emphasizing a need to eliminate access to areas that attract waterfowl.

Officials warn that while humans are rarely infected with avian influenza viruses, those that have prolonged close contact with sick or dead birds are most at risk.

Authorities also advise the public to prevent their pets from making contact with wild birds.
