NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — Dozens of people in New Bedford protested Saturday morning the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

The “WE WON’T GO BACK” march began at 11 a.m. at Buttonwood Park and ended at the New Bedford Free Public Library.

Organizer Diana Painter said the march’s route was calculated. The group of about 100 walked down Union Street, which used to be named King Street, until the United States declared it’s independence from Great Britain.

“That’s showing our unity and making sure that they understand that this is our country, we can change it, and we can own it,” explained Painter.

The march was hosted by Southeastern MA Women’s Alliance and allies group.

“This decision will undoubtedly plunge millions of people into chaos and uncertainty at a time when our top priority should be expanding equity and access for all,” Painter said in a statement.

“As we navigate the fallout from the decision, we will stand as a movement and provide a place to share your response and focus on education and opportunities to take action.”
