Drive-thru ashes offered in Rumford for Ash Wednesday
RUMFORD, R.I. — Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, a sacred season of reflection, prayer and repentance.
Newman Congregational Church and United Church of Christ are making it easier for people to observe the tradition by offering drive-thru ashes.
The church will be providing ashes on Wednesday, March 5th, during two time slots, from 6:30 – 9:00 a.m. and from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Participants can drive through the church parking lot at 100 Newman Avenue in Rumford to receive ashes and a blessing from clergy members with no need to leave their cars.
Drive-thru Ash Wednesday services have become more common in recent years, offering a moment of reflection for those with busy schedules.
“This is our ninth year providing ashes to go,” said Reverend Jennifer Zogg, pastor of the Church of the Epiphany in Rumford.
“People stop by on their way to work or school, looking for a moment of prayer and blessing. We want to provide that sacred ritual to begin Lent.”
Ash Wednesday serves as a reminder of human mortality and the need for spiritual renewal.
Traditionally, ashes are placed on the forehead in the shape of a cross, symbolizing the phrase, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
“Lent is a season of prayer, simplicity and service,” Reverend Zogg said.
“We begin it by remembering our shared humanity and God’s grace.”
Newman Congregational Church hopes to see over 100 people throughout the day.
“There are certain things that will always make sense, bringing people together and meeting them where they are,” said Reverend Sam Lovett of Newman Congregational Church.
“This drive-thru service provides a moment of connection, even on a busy day.”
For those looking to receive ashes, the church welcomes all to stop by at either time slot.
