Driver charged after obliterating ice cream sign, fence in Bellingham crash

BELLINGHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — A driver was charged after destroying an ice cream sign and crashing through a fence in Bellingham on Sunday.

The Bellingham Police Department said 38-year-old Robert Marcoux was criminally cited for operating under the influence and operating to endanger.

Officers responded to the area of Pulaski Boulevard by Hilltop Farms around 7:27 p.m. for a reported crash and arrived to find a Marcoux’s truck in the store parking lot.

Authorities said an initial investigation revealed Marcoux was speeding when he side-swiped another vehicle by Pool Pro and veered off the roadway.

The truck then hit a stone wall and sign at Pool Pro, plowed into the Chevy’s Ice Cream sign, and smashed through a chain link fence into the Hilltop Farms lot, narrowly missing several parked cars.

Marcoux was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and cited with a marked lanes violation and speeding, in addition to the aforementioned charges.

Chevy’s Ice Cream released the following statement regarding the incident:

When you work hard to run a business you feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude to everyone that chooses to pull into your parking lot. Your customers really mean something to you. Our attitudes this week haven’t been the best after a few hiccups prevented us from opening in time for such a beautiful weekend. But after viewing our footage from last nights incident, there aren’t even any words to express how thankful we are. If we were open, this could’ve been an absolute tragedy. The “what ifs” won’t stop running through our minds so please understand that right now we just need to tell you all how much we appreciate you. We may be a few days later than expected but we will be open soon!
