Driver in custody after chase, crash off I-295 in Johnston

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Johnston police said a person is in custody pending criminal charges after a police chase Tuesday night.

The chase ended in a crash on Scituate Avenue just off I-295 in Johnston.

Police said they spotted a minivan driving in the area of Greenville Avenue without its lights on around 8:45 p.m.

Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but police said the driver did not stop and took the on-ramp to I-295 South.

During the chase, the driver took Exit 7 off the highway, and hit a guard rail off of Scituate Avenue.

First responders took the driver to the hospital, but police said they were not seriously injured.

The cruiser involved in the chase hit a traffic sign at the end of the Exit 7 ramp.

Police said the officer was not injured.

The driver of the minivan is being held pending charges for eluding police and reckless driving.

They have not yet been identified by police.
