PROVIDENCE, RI_ Police arrest a man for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs that resulted in a death.
The Rhode Island State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks responded to a call, on March 28 at 2:46 am, which reported a rollover accident on Route 95 North.
Hector Diaz, 20 of Providence, was driving a 2006 Mazda minivan when he lost control of the vehicle three hundred feet south of the Point Street overpass.
The vehicle exited the right side of the roadway and hit a light pole that caused the van to roll over multiple times.
The twenty-three year old man from Providence, who was a passenger in the backseat, was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to the Rhode Island Hospital where he passed away.
The victim’s identify is being withheld pending the notification to his next of kin.
Jennifer Gomez, 21, and Jasleen Gomez, 18, both from Providence, were also passengers of the minivan, who were taken to Rhode Island Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and later released.
Officials say Diaz showed signs of impairment before Troopers took him into custody and transported him to Lincoln Woods Barracks. Upon arrival he refused to take a breathalyzer test.
Troopers sought a search warrant which allowed them to take Diaz to Rhode Island Hospital where blood samples were taken.
Diaz was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs resulting in a death, reckless driving resulting in a death and driving to endanger.
He was arraigned and surety bail was set at $100,000 and is scheduled for a pre-arraignment conference.
