DUI bills are reintroduced on first day of legislative session

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Senators Leonidas Raptakis and David Tikoian will be reintroducing DUI offenses during the opening of the 2024 legislative session.

The following bills will be reintroduced from the 2023 legislative session by sens. Raptakis and Tikoian:

  • License plates of a vehicle will be confiscated by a police officer if the owner was arrested for driving while their license was suspended, revoked or cancelled for refusing to submit to a chemical test or for operating under the influence
  • The lookback period for repeat offenses involving the DUI of alcohol or drugs and for repeat offenses related to failure or refusal to submit to chemical tests will extend from five years to ten years
  • Sentencing and fines for driving so as to endanger, resulting in death or personal injury, will be increased

Both senators said that other bills regarding driving under the influence will be introduced later in the legislative session.
