Brown Bears news release…
PROVIDENCE,
R.I. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced today that Brown
University has been selected to host the 2015 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey
East Regional and the 2016 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse Quarterfinals.
“Brown University
is thrilled to host two prestigious NCAA Championship events in the city of
Providence,” said Brown Director of Athletics Jack Hayes. “We take great pride
in bringing fans throughout the country to our campus and Rhode Island to enjoy
national-caliber competition. Brown is excited to once again partner with the
Dunkin' Donuts Center and the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority in
showcasing these events. “
Brown will
partner with the Dunkin' Donuts Center and the city of Providence to host the 2015
NCAA Division I men's ice hockey East Regional. Game dates and times have not
been finalized, but will be held between March 27-29.
The regional winner earns
a trip to the 2015 Frozen Four at the TD Garden in Boston (April 9-11). Brown
previously hosted the NCAA men's hockey regional at the Dunkin' Donuts Center
in 2013, marking the first NCAA men's hockey tournament competition in
Providence since 2003.
“I
am thrilled that the city of Providence and Brown University have been awarded
the 2015 NCAA Division I Hockey East Regional,” said Brown head men's
hockey coach Brendan Whittet '94. “As a Rhode Island native and Brown
alum, I am proud that we will host what promises to be an outstanding weekend
of elite NCAA hockey in a great venue and wonderful city.”
“We
are immensely proud to be the chosen site for this tremendous event,” said
James Bennett ‘79, Chairman of The Rhode Island Convention Center Authority.
“This would not have been possible if not for the partnership between Brown University,
the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the DDC
staff, who have done their due diligence to make this happen.”
The 2016 NCAA
Division I men's lacrosse Quarterfinals will be held at Brown Stadium. Game
dates and times have not been finalized, but will take place on either May 21
or 22. The semifinals and championship game of the 2016 NCAA Division I men's
lacrosse championship will be held at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field
(May 28-30).
Brown previously hosted the NCAA Championship in 1976 and 1985, as
well as the NCAA North First Round at Brown Stadium in 2002. Brown has also
hosted first round games at Stevenson Field against Maryland in 1991, Navy in
1994, and Cornell in 1995.
“I am
excited not only for our Brown lacrosse program and fan base, but also for the greater
Rhode Island lacrosse community,” said Brown head men's lacrosse coach
Lars Tiffany '90. “Considering Brown's rich lacrosse tradition and the Ivy
League's commitment to the sport, we are thrilled to add to that history by
hosting the 2016 Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals.”
“We really
want to thank everyone who put in a bid,” said Mark Lewis, NCAA executive vice
president of championships and alliances. “The competitiveness of the bids made
it extremely difficult for the sport committees to select sites as there just
weren't spots for all of the great bids we received. Ultimately the sites that
were selected will provide our student-athletes, coaches and fans the best
experience possible.”
