PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – An early morning shooting lead to a police chase which ended up with one suspect being taken into custody.
A police report says that two officers were patrolling the area of Elmwood Ave and Whitmarsh St just after 1:00 Thursday morning when they heard multiple gun shots ring out from the area of Updike Street.
When the officers arrived to the scene they saw two vehicles turning off of Updike Street and speeding off, following each other closely. The officers turned on their lights, but neither car stopped.
The officers chased after the cars but one got away when they took turns in opposite directions.
The chase, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph, came to a halt when the suspect crashed into an electrical box at the intersection of Vermont Ave and Broad St.
The suspect then took off on foot but was quickly apprehended. Police say the suspect was “highly uncooperative.”
Meanwhile both Providence and Cranston police continued to search the area for the other suspect described as a short, thin Hispanic male wearing a sweatshirt.
Although that suspect was not found, police did find a firearm inside of the car seen by police earlier that morning. The firearm was taken by police and is said to be reported as stolen.
When officers went back to the scene of the shooting they found nine shell casings and a bullet hole in a house on Princeton Ave.
As of now police have not identified the suspect who has been caught but say they are being treated at Rhode Island Hospital.
