Early morning Smithfield motel fire displaces 27 people

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — 27 people have been displaced after a Friday morning motel fire in Smithfield.

The fire broke out on the second floor of the Alpine Motel at approximately 4 a.m., according to the Smithfield Fire Department.

There were no injuries in the fire, but motel residents were evacuated into the 11 degree temperatures as crews worked to fire the fire.

The Red Cross is assisting residents in need and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
