A famous tall ship will soon be calling Narragansett Bay home.
The 72-foot Starbound recently made its way from Maine to Wickford for inspection and repairs on its 65-year-old masts. The new masts will be designed in a way that maintains the ship’s historical accuracy and beauty.
Once the repairs are complete and the weather allows, Starbound will be sanded down to bare wood and refinished, take on new sails and spars and make its way to its new home port, Norton’s in East Greenwich.
Starbound will be the primary vessel for Sea Scouts Ship 1909, part of the Boy Scouts of America, a co-ed organization for young adults between the ages of 14 and 21.
The charter is run by a local non-profit, S.A.L.T.Y – Seamanship and Leadership Training for Youths. Starbound will be traveling local waters, mostly around Narragansett Bay, Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard and Cuttyhunk.
Built in 1950, Starbound has actually twice sailed around the world, and was once owned by famed singer and actor Burl Ives.
