East Providence names new fire chief

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The city of East Providence stayed internal in the choice for its next fire chief.

Mayor Bob DaSilva announced Tuesday that Michael Carey will officially take over as the 17th Chief of the East Providence Fire Department effective Feb. 27.

Carey has served as Acting Chief since Nov. 18, 2023, and has been in fire service for more than three decades.

“[Carey] has successfully served as Acting Chief and has proven his dedication to the East Providence Fire Department and the residents of this great city over his 33 years of service to the Department,” Mayor DaSilva said in a statement.

Officials said Carey served 25 of those years in a supervisory capacity as a fire officer and the last seven years as a chief officer.

The mayor’s office noted that Carey is a recipient of the Medal of Valor Service Bar, the National Disaster Response Service Bar, and the Citation Service Bar Star, among other awards.

Carey began his career as a firefighter with the East Providence Fire Department in 1990 and has risen through the ranks from Fire Lieutenant to Fire Chief.
