Demolition underway for carousel at Easton’s Beach

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Demolition is happening down at Easton’s Beach in Newport, as the carousel building is currently being torn down.

It was built back in 1952, and has been closed since 2021 due to the building’s integrity being called into question.

In a Facebook post, the city of Newport wrote that “the sea level rise and storm surges having an increasingly detrimental effect on the coastal infrastructure across the city.”

They said that currently, they’re working with a team of engineers and oceanographic experts on how to reimagine the beach for residents and future generations.

The construction is supposed to wrap before July 4, according to the city.
