WESTERLY, R.I. (WLNE) — An eight-foot porbeagle shark was found washed up on East Beach in Watch Hill in Westerly Thursday.

A shark that thrives in colder water, this several hundred pound shark was recovered by the Atlantic Shark Institute after being spotted by a beach goer.

“The porbeagle is much less known than their close relatives the white shark and the mako, but
it’s a gorgeous and formidable shark that is truly New England’s year round bruiser,” said
Jon Dodd, Executive Director of the Atlantic Shark Institute.

The shark showed no outward signs of trauma and will be further examined via a necropsy by the institute.
