NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said eight entangled seals have been rescued due to a newly installed camera at the Northern Lighthouse on Block Island.

The eight seals are currently being rehabilitated at the Mystic Aquarium, and will eventually be released back into the ocean.

According to RIDEM, Mystic Aquarium and RIDEM’s Division of Marine Fisheries began the initiative to monitor the seal population in the area and support conservation efforts.

If anyone happens to see an entangled or distressed seal, RIDEM said to call the Mystic Aquarium Hotline at (860) 572-5955 x 107.

Additionally, RIDEM said to stay at least 150 feet away from seals if spotted. This is because approaching seals can put “serious stress” on them, which can cause harm.

RIDEM added that approaching seals is illegal under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.
