Enforcement of Pay-As-You-Throw in Fall River starts tomorrow

By News Staff
Fall River residents may see a fine if they don’t properly follow the pay-as-you-throw trash program.
Mayor Sam Sutter says enforcement will pick up starting Friday, and inspectors will waste no time making the rounds to check for citizen compliance.
Any resident who does not use the purple bags to throw out their trash will be given a warning. After one warning, non-compliant residents will then be issued a violation and a $100 fine.
Sutter says, “The Pay-As-You-Throw system in place isn’t perfect, especially considering the way it was implemented. However, it is the system we have, so we have to make it work as well as we can. With only 80-85% of Fall River residents complying with the program, we need to start issuing warnings and then fines and enforcing the rules to bring compliance as close to 100% as we can. Every Fall River resident produces trash, and it costs the City money to remove that trash, so every resident needs to contribute their fair share to pay for its removal. My solid waste task force has been hard at work figuring out the sanitation system that best serves the City’s needs, but until their study is complete, we need to make Pay-As-You-Throw more effective than it has been.”
